Gaelic Football Home

Gaelic Football is one of the main sports played in Ireland, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA - estb. 1884) is the governing body for Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie & Handball. Throughout the years these sports have been the mainstay of the community in Ireland with all age groups playing, whether it be a kick about in the local farmers field or one of the many organized games at the local GAA grounds.
Gaelic Football (similar to the other sports under the GAA) brings a proud tradition to all local parishes in Ireland & abroad, the dream of many young players is to wear their county jersey in pursuit of an All-Ireland title.

Although established in 2004 the Celtic Cowboys did not play their first competitive Gaelic Football match until the clubs trip to San Diego in August 2006 (refer to Gaelic Football Gallery for pics). A panel of 18 players made the trip to the west coast where we played the local Setanta club. In a closely contested game the Cowboys lost on 1-16 to 1-14 scoreline. This performance paved the way for us to register as a club with the North American County Board (NACB) & subsequently compete in the National Championships in Chicago on Labour Day weekend 2007. Although defeated in the 1/4 final, our first trip to the national finals was one to remember, with some fine performances on & off the pitch by the panel that travelled (refer to 'Chicago 2007' for further details).
In September (labor day wknd) 2008 the Club traveled to Boston to compete in the National Finals. The Celtic Cowboys were victorious claiming the Junior D title.
Before that trip the club traveled to Denver to participate in a four team tournament during the Celtic Festival. The other teams playing in the tournament are Setanta (San Diego), Phoenix & Denver Gaels. The Celtic Cowboys won the tournament beating all the teams.
Additionally last year the club had undertaken a new venture with the local Aussie Rules Team (Austin Crows); the first game in the International Compromised Rules series was played on June 14th, with a second game played on June 28. The series is finely balanced at one game a piece. The decider was played on July 19th at Zilker Park in Austin. This hard fought game ended up with the Celtic Cowboys winning. We are looking forward to more competitive games this year with the Austin Crows.
With two trophies and winning the Denver tournament last year we are hoping for another very successful year in 2009.
